A Pastor In Trouble.

April 6, 2009 · 7 Comments

A Pastor who disregards the lap (noun) of the people is a pastor in trouble. This weekend as I mingled around the 1400 seat auditorium of our Edmond Campus at LifeChurch.tv, I noticed something – people’s laps were lit up.  iPhones, Blackberry’s, and other mobile devices.  This presents both some challenges and opportunities.

Challenges. Children who have lost interest start to fidget and play.  Adults who have lost interest used to count ceiling tiles or daydream.  Now, they update their Facebook status. The Pastors response – get mad and write people off as ‘consumers’ and ‘worldly’ , or engage them with a highly relevant, life changing, ‘on the edge of their seat’ message.

Opportunities. When someone was engaged in the Pastor’s message they used to yell out, ‘Amen’. Even though it’s kind of strange, that’s what they did.  Now, when someone is engaged with the message they Twitter the points and sound bytes of the message.  If 100 people twitter the pastors points, all of a sudden, easily 20,000 people are experiencing the message.  The reverb effect is incredible.

Did any of you who attended church this weekend browse the web during the message?  Anyone twitter some great points?  My lap was lit up.
