Singing In Church Is Just Strange.

April 14, 2009 · 4 Comments

band-blogLet’s face it, a group of people standing up and lethargically uttering a bunch of words to a lifeless song is just strange.  I say we nix it, save ourselves some time, and quit singing in church.

I didn’t say, ’stop the music’, just quit singing in church.  There is a big difference between ’singing in church’ and ‘worshipping God through song’.    Worshipping God through music and song is not only Scritpural, it’s natural.  Here’s why.

Music tells a story.  It tells the story of our past and what could have been.  The story of our present and what we’re going through.  And, music can connect our story to the future and inspire us to dream about what could be.  Music is the universal language of our universal struggles and desires.  A great song resonates deeply with our life’s story.

Music gives expression.  Add to our story the redemptive story of Christ.  His forgiveness and working in our lives.  Our sense of gratitude, reverence, and awe.  Then, suddenly, our singing becomes a passionate expression of worship.

If you’re just ’singing in church’, maybe it’s time to connect His story with your story.  It’s time to express your response to what He’s done and is doing in your life.  Maybe it’s time to stop singing and start worshipping.  After all, singing in church is just strange.
